Sadrollah Bahrami, Deputy of Engineering and Civil Works at the Khuzestan Ports and Maritime directorate, highlighted the strategic importance of developing railway infrastructure to boost port operational efficiency.
"The project is currently underway to restore and upgrade the existing railway lines, focusing on track surfacing, substructure, and drainage systems," Bahrami explained. "This initiative plays a crucial role in strengthening rail transport capacity and facilitating services for cargo owners and economic actors at Imam Khomeini Port."
Bahrami detailed the scope of the ongoing operations, which include the demolition of asphalt and reinforced concrete on existing lines, the removal of rails and switches, excavation, and bed correction. Further activities involve rebar installation, slab concreting, sleeper installation, rail laying, and the assembly of railway lines.
"The scale of execution is significant," he noted. "The project involves thousands of meters of excavation and substructure work, the paving of tens of thousands of square meters of asphalt, the installation of thousands of sleepers, and the assembly of several kilometers of railway lines. Its completion will be pivotal in modernizing and enhancing the stability of the port’s internal rail network."
According to Bahrami, the development of railway infrastructure in ports is one of the most effective strategies for improving multimodal transport. It significantly contributes to reducing logistics costs, alleviating road traffic, and increasing cargo safety.
"This is particularly critical for high-traffic ports like Imam Khomeini Port, where it can help better manage cargo flow and smooth truck traffic within the port area," he added.
The Deputy of Civil Works emphasized that the completion of this project will enable more effective connectivity for cargo owners and operators to the port’s rail network. This will create favorable conditions for increasing the share of rail transport in cargo movement, expanding transit operations, and strengthening the position of Imam Khomeini Port within the country’s supply chain and logistics network.
