TIN news: Maurício Quintella Lessa, the Brazilian Minister for Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation, has confirmed that funds are not available for the second phase development of the basin at Itajaí Port Complex, which encompasses the ports of Itajaí e Navegantes.
The initial development phase, which will allow vessels of up to 330 metres in length to be accommodated is already at an advanced state, with the state government picking up the $31m cost.
Originally, the second phase development was planned in parallel to avoid delays. This would have allowed 366-metre vessels to access the ports and thereby guarantee the port complex’s future competitiveness. Work was slated to have begun in mid-2014, although it only commenced in June this year following several delays.
The $62m promised by the previous government of Dilma Rousseff is now not available; instead, $6m will be provided to allow work to continue until the second phase can be started.
