TORONTO (AP) _ Franco-Nevada Corp. (FNV) on Wednesday reported first-quarter net income of $171.5 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

The Toronto-based company said it had net income of 90 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were 84 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 79 cents per share.

The precious metals streaming and royalty company posted revenue of $308.9 million in the period.

Franco-Nevada shares have climbed 15% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $143.96, a decline of slightly more than 1% in the last 12 months.
