BURNABY, British Columbia (AP) _ Ballard Power Systems Inc. (BLDP) on Monday reported a loss of $17.6 million in its first quarter.

The Burnaby, British Columbia-based company said it had a loss of 6 cents per share.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 5 cents per share.

The fuel cell technology company posted revenue of $17.6 million in the period, which also fell short of Street forecasts. Eight analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $25.7 million.

Ballard shares have fallen 13% since the beginning of the year. The stock has more than doubled in the last 12 months.
