TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ Williams Cos. (WMB) on Monday reported first-quarter net income of $426 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

The Tulsa, Oklahoma-based company said it had profit of 35 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 28 cents per share.

The pipeline operator posted revenue of $2.61 billion in the period.

Williams Cos. shares have risen 24% since the beginning of the year, while the S&P’s 500 index has climbed 12%. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $24.77, an increase of 34% in the last 12 months.
