What’s the problem?
My calathea seems unhappy no matter what I do.
Diagnosis
Calatheas, now reclassified as Goeppertia and commonly called prayer plants, are known as the drama queens of the plant world. They’re native to tropical rainforests and require our home environments to mimic these to survive. This means they prefer consistent humidity, warm temperatures and filtered light. Common issues arise from low humidity, dry soil or tap water containing salts and chemicals. They’re also sensitive to drafts, sudden temperature changes and direct sunlight.
Prescription
Boost humidity levels by using a humidifier, misting daily, placing the plant on a pebble tray, or grouping it with other plants. Water it with filtered or distilled water. Ensure the soil stays consistently moist, but not soggy – water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Keep your prayer plant in bright, indirect light, away from direct sunlight and drafts, and maintain a temperature range of 18–24C.

Prevention
To keep your plant happy, maintain a stable environment without drastic changes in light, temperature or humidity. Keep humidity high. Never let the room temperature drop below 16C, and monitor for signs of stress such as curling or browning. With consistent care, your prayer plant will reward you with its strikingly patterned foliage.
