Wizards lose Bilal Coulibaly (fractured wrist) for the rest of season

The injury will not require surgery, which means the teenager could still be able to play for France this summer at the Paris Olympics.

The injury-riddled Washington Wizards received more bad news Monday when the team announced Bilal Coulibaly will miss the remaining 14 games of the season with a fractured right wrist. The injury ends a bright rookie year for the 19-year-old, who was averaging 8.4 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting 43.5 percent from the field.

The fracture, which occurred during Saturday night’s loss in Chicago, will not require surgery, according to the Wizards, which indicates Coulibaly still could play for the French national team at this summer’s Paris Olympics alongside his childhood friend Victor Wembanyama. The tournament begins July 27.

Coulibaly might not have been the most hyped draft pick in Wizards history, but he ends his first year as perhaps the most beloved rookie in seasons.

He was the third-youngest player in the NBA, and his exuberant youth combined with his low-key demeanor, self-possession and talent beyond expectation earned him a special place in Wizards fans’ hearts during an otherwise bleak season.

At 6-foot-8, Coulibaly is a slight physical presence but showed a preternatural court awareness early on. He used his length to disrupt plays on defense and moved well. Even his shooting — a cause of some concern after the Wizards traded up to select him with the seventh overall pick in June — impressed: he shot 34.6 percent from beyond the arc on 2.9 attempts per game, solid for a rookie.

But Coulibaly was most lauded this year for the gusto with which he accepted challenging defensive assignments. The Wizards wanted him to absorb as much experience as possible, so he almost always matched up against the best guard or wing on the floor, including Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum and Jalen Brunson.

His 27.2 minutes per game were fifth most among rookies. He ranks 14th in points per game and 12th in rebounds per game among rookies and was selected to the rising star showcase over All-Star Weekend last month.

The Wizards (11-57), meanwhile, will have to limp along without him — and a handful of other starters. They’ll be without seven players for Tuesday’s game against Houston: Deni Avdija (knee), Marvin Bagley III (back), Tyus Jones (back), Eugene Omoruyi (ankle) and Landry Shamet (calf) will not play. Isaiah Livers is out for the season with a hip injury. Kyle Kuzma is listed as questionable for Tuesday with shoulder soreness.
