CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) _ United Fire Group Inc. (UFCS) on Wednesday reported first-quarter net income of $18.7 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based company said it had profit of 74 cents. Losses, adjusted for investment gains, were 3 cents per share.

The property and casualty insurance company posted revenue of $300.7 million in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $276.2 million.

United Fire shares have climbed 20% since the beginning of the year. The stock has risen 12% in the last 12 months.
