ELLEN DEGENERES QUITTING HER TV SHOW

NEW YORK (AP) — Ellen DeGeneres is pulling the plug on her own show. The TV host — whose career and reputation has been scuffed up by complaints that she presided over a toxic workplace — will leave her show when her contract ends next year. She laid out her plans in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. She says as a creative person, she needs a challenge, but doing a daily show is “just not a challenge anymore.” The “Ellen” show began in 2003 and has been popular. But last summer, there was turmoil. Three producers left over allegations that some staffers were bullied — and others faced sexual misconduct and racially insensitive remarks. DeGeneres apologized on the air — but some fans were turned off. Nielsen reports viewership dropped by 1.1 million this season.

NEW ROCK & ROLL HALL MEMBERS NAMED

NEW YORK (AP) — You may not find a more diverse trio of artists than Jay-Z, Foo Fighters and the Go-Go’s. But one thing they have in common — is that they are being inducted together into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. All three acts get in on their first try. Also voted in are Tina Turner, Carole King and Todd Rundgren. LL Cool J and Billy Preston get in as musical excellence awards. The induction ceremony is set for Oct. 30 in Cleveland.

TAYLOR SWIFT SEEKS TO RALLY YOUNG PEOPLE

LONDON (AP) — Taylor Swift says there are always going to be people who feel free to “say anything they want” about you. But she says people should never forget they “always have the right to prove them wrong.” Swift delivered the message of empowerment while accepting the global icon award at the Brit Awards in London last night. The award puts Swift in good company; previous winners are Elton John and David Bowie.

DUA LIPA CALLS FOR HIGHER PAY FOR U.K. HEALTH WORKERS

LONDON (AP) — It isn’t just at American awards shows that celebrities make political statements. It happened at the Brit Awards last night, too. Dua Lipa won two awards last night — and made a pitch for British health workers to get raises. The singer urged the crowd at the O2 Arena to push British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to back raises for medical workers. She got a receptive ear, since most of the 4,000 present for the London event were health care workers and their guests. Lipa took home the awards for best female solo and album of the year last night.

ELON MUSK DRAWS BIG AUDIENCE FOR “SNL” HOSTING STINT

NEW YORK (AP) — The ratings are in for Elon Musk’s appearance as host on “Saturday Night Live.” And just as the billionaire was able to boast about running Tesla and Space X, he can also brag about boosting the show’s ratings. Nielsen reports the show Musk hosted drew 7.3 million viewers — the third most-watched episode this season. The only ones with a bigger audience were hosted by Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle.

NORMAN LLOYD, VETERAN TV AND MOVIE STAR, DIES AT 106

LOS ANGELES (AP) — His career spanned decades — and he interacted with Hollywood legends like Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock and Charlie Chaplin. Norman Lloyd has died. He was 106 — and his credits ran from 1939 to 2015. He’s best known to TV viewers as Dr. Auschlander on “St. Elsewhere,” the kindly overseer of the infamous St. Eligius — a hospital nicknamed St. Elsewhere, since would-be patients would be advised to seek treatment anywhere but there. His son reports Lloyd died yesterday at his Los Angeles home.

FITTING BROADWAY BACK INTO COSTUMES

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s a problem many of us have because of the pandemic: an expanding waistline. And while most of those working at home can get around that by buying the next size up in sweatpants, it isn’t as easy for those who have to shoehorn their way into a fitted Broadway costume. It’s one of the chores that must be taken care of now, that musicals and dramas are ready to return to New York theaters. Costume designers will be checking to see if performers are still able to fit their outfits — and make alterations if not. Other concerns will be making and enforcing COVID protocols for audiences, since producers need full houses to have a chance to turn a profit once Broadway reopens starting in September.

METROPOLITAN OPERA RECHES DEAL TO RESUME PERFORMANCES

NEW YORK (AP) — The Metropolitan Opera has reached a tentative agreement on a four-year contract with the American Guild of Musical Artists. That’s the first of three major labor deals the Met must secure for it to reopen in September. If the musicians’ deal is ratified on May 24, it would take effect Aug. 1. The Met is still working on deals with unions for orchestra members and stagehands.
